TikTok increased the number of characters in video descriptions from 300 to 2,200 in September 2022. It was stated that users who added longer descriptions would have a better chance of appearing in people’s ‘For you’ pages. Personally, I haven’t seen many TikTok videos with lengthy descriptions in my ‘For You’ page, so I was intrigued to learn more about it.
Brendan Gahan, a creator on TikTok, experimented with his own TikTok account, posting 18 TikTok videos with very long (SEO-optimized) descriptions and 18 TikTok videos with short descriptions. Here’s what he noticed:
- The 18 videos with a short description received an average of 10k views per video.
- The 18 videos with (SEO-optimized) long descriptions received an average of 37k views.
- When compared to non-optimized videos, videos with SEO-optimized long descriptions received three times the views.
We have recently seen TikTok attempting to compete with Amazon and Google, and SEO optimised content would assist them in reaching a more competitive angle.
Will you try to add more lengthy descriptions to test this method?
