The 2021 App Store Awards recognise the best apps and games of the year that, as a statement explains, “helped users tap into personal passions, discover creative outlets, connect with new people and experiences, and simply have fun”.
The chosen winners fall into ten different categories spanning apps and games, with Apple also recognising a particular trend this year: Connection. Apple’s global App Store editors identified that this theme that had a lasting impact on people’s lives – particularly during a year of minimal physical connection – and highlighted several apps and games that fell under that umbrella.
“The developers who won App Store Awards in 2021 harnessed their own drive and vision to deliver the best apps and games of the year – sparking the creativity and passion of millions of users around the world,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. “From self-taught indie coders to inspiring leaders building global businesses, these standout developers innovated with Apple technology, with many helping to foster the profound sense of togetherness we needed this year.”
Within the trend of the year awards, Apple highlights apps that brought people together in meaningful ways, including Among Us!, a game that cultivated community through bite-size matches that urge users to talk, dating app Bumble and EatOkra, a user-driven guide to more than 11,000 Black-owned eateries that helps people find ways to invest in their community.
