In a groundbreaking move, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte has taken a decisive step towards safeguarding the state’s digital landscape. On Wednesday, he officially sanctioned a bill that effectively bars TikTok from operating within Montana’s borders and prohibits the downloading of this popular short-form video app. This makes Montana the first state in the nation to institute a complete ban on TikTok.
Following the bill’s successful passage in the state legislature last month, Governor Gianforte wasted no time in enshrining it into law. Scheduled to take effect on January 1, this momentous ban will hold TikTok, as well as Google and Apple’s app stores, accountable for daily fines of $10,000 each time a user is presented with an opportunity to access or download TikTok.
